Rest is not rehab. . Any athlete regardless of the level they compete or participate at or regardless of sport, has been injured at some stage. Injuries usually carry with them a worry that it might be serious, frustration because you cannot continue training and a loss of social interaction if you compete or participate in a group ie, a club or class session. . In most cases sports injuries occur due to progressive overloading tissues coupled with inadequate rest, recovery and poor hydration. . Often with injuries there is no tissue damage. We know that pain that persists beyond 6wks is very unlikely to be due to tissue damage. So what can you do? . If your sport is largely endurance based then perhaps you need to spend time on flexibility or strength training for a brief period. If your sport is strength based then perhaps you need to spend time on power or agility training... And so on. If you do HIIT classes and you are injured perhaps you need to mix it up with light endurance until you recover. . Taking complete rest and time away from activity is not advisable, even if you are in pain. Those in the waiting area WITHOUT pain normally have the 'worst posture' Pain isn't caused by posture! SLUMP SLOUCH RELAX. YOUR BACK IS STRONG! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Poor posture doesn't cause pain. We know this because if it did everybody would be in pain because we all, at times, have bad posture. We don't often sit with good posture at work or at home while watching TV. Take a look around your work or social life, all sorts of people have really bad posture but most aren't in pain. . Pain is much more complex than singling out one cause. . Deconditioned muscles or a body too used to a sedentary life may experience pain while sitting or standing for a long period. Don't let anybody put you in movement jail. Movement is good, always. Even if you are in pain research shows that moving is more beneficial than rest. . Exercise is movement. So, exercise is good. There are no bad exercises and there are no bad movements. There are however, inappropriate exercises or times when your favoured exercise needs to be adapted or changed. You might need a period of stretching instead of strength or a period of power instead of endurance etc. etc. . Hips become strong from running. Disc heal really well in 2-6wks. If you had bone rubbing on bone you'd be in surgery. You can not spend every minuet of every day thinking about your posture. . The human body is biological not mechanical. It is living, growing and changing everyday. It does not get worn out. Motion is lotion - if your are feeling tight, tense, stressed or in pain or discomfort, movement will help you feel better everytime. . Walk, run, cycle, swim, lift, push, pull, climb, paddle, row, stretch or jump. It really doesn't matter what you do so long as you are active I guarantee you'll feel better. . Don't worry that your exercise is causing your pain. It's not. Don't think that your exercise will make you feel worse. It won't. Don't fear that your exercise is causing damage. It isn't. We know this because it has been researched A LOT over the past 40 years. .
